light experiment

Light has various possibilities. For example, just by changing the direiction of light, the form of space can be changed. Allowing for various factors that related with light such as color, refraction, reflection, strengthness, shape of screen, shadow, its effects might be termless.

Light

Obviously, light is an important factor in space. It does not mean just proper lightness for working. Light is an important key for atmosphere, and I believe it could make space it self.

Gothic church

What makes gothic church's special atmosphere?

High ceiling?
Lightness?
Stained glass?
Sound?
Sacred scultures?

I really need to scrutinize the factors which make gothic church's atmosphere and apply the factors for the people who want to cherish their deceased person.

Cinerarium

The ways of death rites depend on personal belief and religion. However, because of the lack of space for burial, another way and space for death is needed.

Cinerarium where keep the ash jar is one of them. More and more people choose cremation. Even it is opposite with their belief or religion, because of realistic problems, they should choose the way.

Even though, it is because of realistic problem, they still need a space for cherishing their loved person. However, the cinerariums seem not so much appropriate for the cherishing.

Churches in cemetery

Some of the houese have a small window with stained glass. It reminded me a gothic churches.

In gothic churches, the stained glass is a kind of medium to the sacred world. Light from the special window makes special atmosphere in the church and the special atmosphere helps people to focus on their belief. People are using the elements in their family's tomb.

I believe it could be really helpful to people who want to cherish their loved person.

Houses at cemetery

Although, I couldn't find so much special things at the cemetery, various forms of tombs were interesting.

Especially, the form of small house was impressive.

Pere-Lachaise

There are various ways of death rites. The rituals are deeply related with personal belief, religion and culture.

Cemetery is one of representative space for death. However, the form of cemetery is also various. Even the notion of cemetery for european is different with Korea, the cemetery could be a kind of park for people. Even, young couples enjoy their date in the cemetery. The fact was unfamiliar with me, because for Korean people, cemetery is kind of space of fear.

So, I went to one of the famous cemetery in Paris, Pere-Lachaise to find out the differences.

Space for death

Space for death is one of representative place where need special atmosphere.

There are various type of spaces for death. However, I doubt the spaces have special atmosphere which is appropriate for cherishing deceased person.

Isolation

Ando Tadao, Church of the light

However, all the people need time for their own.
They need time to be isolated.

Especially, when people in religious space such as church, temple, they need to be isolated from world and focus on their own mind or the other world.

This kind of dividng is so unnatural that it need some special factors. Those factors offer special atmosphere in the space.

When you go into a church or temple, you might feel the space is quite different with outside space. I want to study the factors which divide those space from out world.

The reason

During the intro project,
when i'm thinking about design,
almost always in my general life,
I can' t get out of thinking of division and compositon of space.

Even when I change the position of funiture in my room, it is not easy but also interesting.

I might think a house as furniture and a housing complex as my room.
I might think architecture as furniture and urban as my room.

It's not easy but more interesting when I care about the relationship between that.

Intro-project

Basically, the form is from one of Korean Palace. Each boxes means areas for the specific people such as King, civil officials and military officials. So they are divided into a kind of space hierarchy. For example, the Red area which symbolize King's area is on the highest level.

Because of the front yard was a space for official events, each areas were strictly divided into left and right side for specific people of each party. However, back yard was a space for discussion between king and officials. So I didn't divide the back yard into left and right side with acrylic material. However, historically, some party had dominant power in specific period, so the space might be divided into the atmosphere. I symbolize that with different density of water which is divided into layers. They are divided into groups without any material division.

We can experience similar phenomenon in our usual space. I want to show the notion of immaterial division.

Experiment for Intro-project

I've checked the possibility of making liquid layers with different density of sugar water and oil.

Idea for Intro-project

I decide to show the notion of space hierachy as my intro-project.

Especially, I want to focus on the immaterial factors between space and space. Each area in specific space is divided into special atmosphere and the atmosphere is something more than just wall and roof. I want to show the immaterial division.

To show the notion, I plan to make a transplent boxes without bottom which symbol the building of Korean Palace and put them together under the rule of hierarchy. Then, by pouring various liquid which has different density and color, I want to make liquid layers which show the notion of immaterial dividing in space.

Interest: Space and space

I've found that my interests are all about space and space. It's about the relations between space and space which create specific atmosphere of the space.

It may be related with the different scales of each buildings, distance between the buildings. So, I tried to analyze the relations among the areas.

In Korean Palace, each area was devoted for specific people. For example, the central building was for King. The front yardwas divided into left and right side and each side allowed to civil officials and military officials.

Each area which is distinguished different colors shows a kind of space "hierarchy".

Interests4. Painting:by Rene Magritte

Like other people, I like Renet Magritte.

Especially, when I saw this painting "The Heartstring", I really want to have this one. I imagine that If I hang this work up in my room, I can go into the another world through the painting.

Yes, this is surreal.
It gives me a kind of freedom.

Interests3. Sculpture: by John pai

It was amazing that making a space with little pieces of steel. Also, the shape itself which consist of space and the inside space looks interesting. Moreover, the shadow makes the space looks more special.

John pai's work made me to think about materials and the result. It was the awareness about that even if we use usual material, the result can be quite different.

Interests2. Architecture: Korean Palace

Asian Palaces were built under the strict rules and basically Korean Palaces also have their rules. However, sometimes they ignore the rules for respecting the original environment.

The fundamental rules and variation to the placeness make dynamic space. Especially, between the wall and wall, building and building, the relations between material factors create specific atmosphere. In some space, the atmosphere is a kind of coziness but in other space, that is sublime.

I'm wondering, how they calculate all the relations between the architectural factors and even the nature.

Interests1.Film: Dog Vill

What makes space? Bricks? Mortar? Of course not.

In this film, the lines on the floor, sounds and people's acting make the space.

Sometimes, I feel that temperature makes space. Sometimes, wind, noise, color, light..all the immaterial factors make different spaces.

I believe that those factors are more important than material elements when we feel the space.
